Centered on the Zee family’s migrantion journey from Ningbo to Rotterdam over the past century, the book interlaces archival photographs, field research, and visual interventions across three port cities between the NL and China —Rotterdam, Shanghai, and Ningbo. The photobook interrogates notions of displacement, diasporic memory, and identity in transit. These three port cities, historically linked through maritime trade and migration, form the geographic anchors of a century-old diaspora narrative. However, beyond historical reconstruction, these research trips intersect contemporary debates on global migration, port economies, and transnational labor networks in the age of globalization. Through the concept of “image migration,” Vera Zhou’s research examines how visual memory and migration histories move across time and space. By projecting archival photographs onto contemporary landscapes in Rotterdam, Shanghai, and Ningbo, she constructs a visual dialogue between past and present, exposing the tensions between personal memory and institutionalized history. She digitized the entirety of David Zee’s family archive, organizing its contents chronologically and thematically, and translated original texts from Dutch into both English and Chinese. These birds aren’t native. Some say they escaped from pet cages, others believe they fled zoos. Unlike most migratory birds that head south in winter, the green parrot stays. It thrives in the cold, gathers in flocks, and carves out space in parks, suburbs, and rooftops. Over time, they’ve gone from anomaly to fixture — unsettlingly foreign, yet undeniably present. This photographic project uses the green parrot as a metaphor for immigrant life in the Netherlands. Like the parrots, many immigrants arrive by chance or necessity, often viewed as outsiders, yet persist and adapt in ways both visible and invisible. Through portraits and urban landscapes, the work explores questions of belonging, displacement, and resilience. Just as the parrots claim the sky without asking, so too do immigrants redefine the meaning of home — not through acceptance, but through presence. I was born in the Year of the Pig and in many cultures, pigs are seen as dirty and often the target of dietary restrictions. They are also used in derogatory vernacular; for example, Facebook Community Standards reflect on this cultural norm that declares pigs as intellectually or physically inferior animals. Calling someone “a pig” on the platform is a breach of its user code and a form of online bullying. Pig, is a mascot of failures. As a child, I was made fun of by the other children and I was left feeling an embodiment of a failed image as a “pig”. I created a dehumanized image-based world made of screens and billboards in the game engine Unity 3D, a world made of pig and pork images. I ask questions like: “How does a pig look at screens in a pig’s world?” Or “Would pigs be offended by pork images on social media?” The virtual world is displayed as an installation of videos on multiple screens representing different multidimensional aspects of man-made products. ︎︎︎Installation 7 channels Video with sound. FadeWhile traveling in Mauritius, I became friends with a family who lived next to my hotel. Before I left, I promised to stay in touch with them by email and to send mosquito patches from China as a gift, since they couldn’t afford them. I also told them I would come back to visit someday. After returning home and developing my film, I discovered that when I had first tried using the flash, I had set the shutter speed incorrectly. As a result, in every photo taken with the flash, only half of the image was properly lit. For many years, I never returned to Mauritius. I never sent an email to the family—not even the electric mosquito patches I had promised. In the meantime, I learned how to use the camera and flash properly. I mastered the art of taking perfectly exposed photographs. I stopped using film; now every image appears instantly on an LED screen, and there are no more irreparable mistakes. But once, my hard drive failed. After recovering the data, I opened the scanned files—many were missing, and others were scarred with strange cracks. Memory fades. Film fades. Even digitally stored files fade. Suffering and entertainment are, in the end, deeply intertwined. The clown’s smile often resembles the contorted grimace of someone in pain. In Chinese, the phrase “sesame and mung bean” refers to trivial matters. These snapshots capture the spontaneous, derivative amusements of ordinary Chinese people. They are surreal and pervasive—magical realist games that, in some ways, help maintain the stability of the social structure. These are not careless indulgences, nor are they merely an escape from life’s burdens. publisher whose work is focused on the production and circulation of images in the new media environment. Her work and research deconstruct and translate the symbolic language created by conceptual theories by documenting and analyzing individuals’ narratives. Vera was born and raised in China in the early page of its globalization and moved to the Netherlands at the onset of the pandemic.
